    IGNORE THIS and read further

I've been excited about the way you can find places on Google maps and personalize them for various reasons.

In my attempt to share some of it, I incorrectly copied and modified Google images as Don pointed out to us.

I was determined to make good use of these maps for the benefit of this forum and discovered that in creating personal maps with markers and annotations, these maps can be shared even if the other person does not have a GMAIL account.

    Here is my example,

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=...d=106109836887502643483.00043510a46b80f73432f

On the map you will find markers that when clicked on will pop-up a window with information.

Or. you can click on the link in the menu at the left. This is handy if the markers are farther apart as maybe when you mark all the campgrounds you have visited in the USA.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands. What do you think?

    I USED to Go-Kart.

These old bones can't handle all that rattling any more.

When we first built it my grandson was 4-5 and I would race him on my riding lawn mower. He got a big kick out of it and, of course, I let him beat me . . .

    I'm way ahead of you.
I started this Personal Google Map several months ago hoping that there would be interest in it. Several people thought it was "neat", but that's where it ended. I put it aside.
I'm bringing it up for use and discussion for RVPICS users again.

I've already started a few maps.

Map #1 is RVPICS Users Locations. A while back I created a map of the top 20 RVPICS posters. Everyone thought it was cool, but I left it at that. The list of top posters has changed by now, so this would be a good opportunity for new users to add their home location.

Map #2 is three locations for a possible future RVPICS Reunion. It is the center point of the 50 USA states, the center point of North America and the center point of the Lower 48 States.

Map #3 is a map I started back when we had a thread about "Pick your 10 favorite spots to visit", or something to that effect. I plotted them on a map.

    Here's the deal.

I'm giving out the GMAIL account name and password so that anyone on here can go to the Google maps, sign in and add to/edit existing maps or create new ones.

We can discuss this and I will help anyone who has difficulty figuring out what to do.

    Let's see how it goes.

    Hey Carl, that sounds cool!!

Uhhh, okay, couldn't resist. I will definitely look at this when I get back from San Antonio. If the grandbabies will let me that is. Might be kinda busy until after Thanksgiving. I remember you doing this back when, but just kinda forgot about it.

That's really nice. I hope you don't mind, but I added myself and 2 campgrounds to each of the 2 maps. I used the green tent icon for the campgrounds.

That's what I'm hoping everyone will do.

    Thanks.

How was your experience? Was it easy to figure out?

Wasn't too difficult... just clicked on the specific map, then searched for the location, I clicked on edit to the left of the map where everyone's names are, then added a marker for my location (you have to go in and change the default marker to the one that's for your house or for a campground, etc... that was a little hard to figure out) and then you fill in the details in the little pop up window... give the marker a final adjustment by dragging it then click "done" on the left side where you clicked on "edit". Clear as mud, right? Sorry if I didn't explain it better. I'm sure if anyone gets stuck you can just ask and we'll help.

I wish this were a sticky thread at the top of the "Campgrounds we have visited" forum or some place where it is easier to locate the RVPICS GOOGLE MAP. I had to use the "search" feature to find this.

    From Carl:

I just added my location, favorite campground and an interesting place to visit. Now all I have to do is remember to check back every now and then to see who else added what. This could be an interesting site to revisit if we get some participation.

These maps are great you guys! [IMG]

Thanks to all who added locations and I really like the notes. I plan to check back frequently and make it a point to work some of these sites into our next big trip.

This was part of my scheme for setting this up.

There are some FANTASTIC pictures of sites here on RVPICS that I'm sure each and everyone of us want to see some day and they are beginning to get buried deep within this forum. The one that keeps popping up in my head is Ed's Banff trip. (Hint, Hint, Hint, Ed)

I thought if we had a central location to keep a record of them that it would be easier for us to locate them this way as we planned our trips.

By using this Google Tool we are able to show exact locations and even add pictures and comments.

Also. you can edit the different places. You can comment on a scenic area or a CG or point out a special fact or spot to see.

Ever look up your address on Google Maps and find that the pushpin for that address is more than a bit off? Now you can edit where Google pinpoints addresses (provided you're logged into your Google account) by clicking the Edit link and dragging the pin to a more appropriate location.

Moves over 200 meters will need to be moderated before they're applied, and you can see the original location or recently moved markers at any time

    AND

HYBRID no longer exists. Well, sorta.

There is a new map type called TERRAIN.

If you click on SATELLITE, you get the HYBRID version by default.

If you "mouse over" SATELLITE, you can uncheck "Show Labels", which will remove the HYBRID view.

Well, actually I'm kinda happy with Google, as well as all the other maps, they all pin-point my house up at the other end of the block. My mailbox is about the equivalent of 4-5 city yards/houses away from my driveway and there are three other drivays and mailboxes in between which all makes it downright fun for strangers to figure out which house is actually mine. I have absolutely no problem with. If I didn't invite you, I don't particularly want you here anyway.

Just got a chance to explore the Google Maps site. I use Google Earth, but had not used the maps feature. It is great! I've added our "home" location, and when more time permits I'll add some favorite campsites. Hope others find this nice feature and more people will add to it. It was fun to get a "visual" of where people are from!

    Thanks for the great idea!

Now THAT'S what I'm Talkin' Bout!!

I've tried numerous times to get this thing off the ground and draw more traffic, but it's just not happening.

Maybe it's too intimidating to actually add the info we are looking for, but as you saw, it's a great tool to help make our group more like family.

So Thank You Karen for adding your info and pointing it out to us.
